My Home Town Puttur

My hometown Puttur is 50km from Arabian Sea with geographic coordinates
12 N, 75 E.

Puttur is in southern India in Deccan plateau. Here people mainly depend on tropical
Monsoon. We grow here arecanut, coconut, pepper in addition to paddy fields and rubber plantation.

Here people talk different languages. But official communication language is Kannada.

The latest craze of school children is playing computer games in Internet cafes.

Here we do have an Engineering college, a Law college and a couple of degree colleges.

Compared to other parts of India literacy rate is quite high. There is a government library where any one can read daily newspapers free of charge and also borrow books.

We have a railway station and bus station. There are lots of auto rickshaws to move within the town. Although many courier services are available people mainly dependent on age old postman to delivery their mail.

In addition to government hospital there are around a dozen of private nursing homes.

Branches of most of Nationalized Banks are there in Puttur. But specialty of Puttur which is a taluk in Dakshina Kannada district, is co-operative societies. Here the farmers and poor people open their account and get benefit of loans with low interest and percentage of recovery of loan is high.

Normally it is a peaceful town each minding his own business.

To the south-east at the edge of the town there is a hill called Birumala Betta. During
weekend in the evenings parents bring their children to play there. Right in the opposite
direction 10km from the town in a place called Uppinagadi two rivers Netravati from
Western Ghats and Kumaradhara from south-east join in front of a temple. It is considerd
a holy place by Hindus and last rites of dispersing the ashes to water is done here.

The main attraction of Puttur is annual religious festival that takes place in the temple of Lord Shiva which is located in heart of the town in the month of April.

In the open ground of 12acres, fare takes place for 10 days. The whole town wakes up during this season irrespective of caste. Relatives from distant places especially come to attend this festival.

During the last day when the idol of the God is taken in chariot almost a lakh devotees
gather. A lot of fireworks are displayed on that night. In this town, I , 33years old engineer live looking after my rubber plantation
